Document Cameras or Visual Presenter but most commonly referred to as docucams are real-time document / object scanning devices used in education and other presentations to simulate video projectors. Some people call it Elmo but in fact it is the name of a manufacturer and not the device. Buyers need to know that there are other good manufacturers for document cameras or Visual presenters. They are in essence, high resolution cameras, mounted on arms to facilitate their placement over a page or an object. This allows a teacher or a presenter to either write on a non-transparent sheet of paper or show a picture or object on the screen while the audiences observe. They had stirred controversy over their high cost, 500-1500 USD plus the cost of a digital projector 800-3000USD versus optical overhead projectors at 100-200 USD, and the need to re-educate teachers and presentations.
Many document cameras are sold with lamps that throw light on the paper, picture or object under tha camera to improve image and visibility on the screen. The cameras can be connected to video projectors through a RCA, composite or a VGA connectors. Obviously the resolution of the image depends upon the camera quality, the connection and the projector resolution. Contrast ration and brightness of the projectors will also make a difference. Latest developments in cameras and video projection technologies have improved the quality of projected images, the total cost of the equipment and mobility due to reduced sizes and weights. Salesmen and presenters can carry the whole document camera and the projector in a small carrying case.
